Emley Show - Record Entry and Attendance
Though the Emley and District Agricultural and Horticultural Society has been in existance only 12 years, the village has, for more than two decades, enjoyed the reputation of having an annual show of horses which would do credit to places of greater pretensions.
Before the Society came into existance, a few enthusiasts awarded prizes to the owners of the finest specimens at a fair held for several years in the principal streets of the village, and even under those conditions the number and excellence of the exhibits were such as to attract a large crowd of admirers.
Naturally, with the formation of the Society, who promoted a show on up-to-date lines, a distinct advance was made, in recent years.
Notwithstanding that the exhibits of cattle, poultry and pigeons have been of average merit to say the least, the horse section has invariably been sufficient in itself to ensure success.
But on Saturday, when the twelfth annual show under the Society's auspices was held in the cricket field, all previous records were eclipsed, the collection of horses being superior in every respect to any which has been seen at Emley before.
This coupled with the fact that all the other sections of the Show compared favourably with previous years. not only enhances the reputation of the village, but augers well for the success of the Society's operations in the future.
The unanimous verdict regarding the Show was that from all points of view it was the best and most successful ever held.
Roughly speaking the entries in the agricultural section numbered 400, the highest in the Society's history.
